Challenge 1: Writing an “About Me” Page

In Challenge 1, you will create a new page or edit the sample page that has been placed on your blog by default. The “About Me” page serves an important function of your blog. Visitors will expect to find an “About Me” page on your blog to:

  • find out more about you as the author of the blog (WHO are you? A teacher in the classroom, an administrator, a coach, a librarian, a parent, a book author, etc.)
  • be able to reference you with your name and/or social media profile/usernames
  • be able to contact you
  • know what general topics/areas they might find you will write about (education, primary level, university level, your PhD dissertation, STEAM, world languages, etc.)
  • establish your credibility (why should your readers believe that you have experience, background knowledge, skills, know-how, wisdom, etc.)
  • put you and your blog in some kind of context ( what are your connections to the topics you might write about? Why are you interested in this particular topic/field?)

First, it is important to understand the difference between the functions of a page and a post on a blog. WordPress describes the difference between pages and posts on their support site:

Posts are entries listed in reverse chronological order on the blog home page or on the posts page if you have set one in Settings  Reading. If you have created any sticky posts, those will appear before the other posts. Posts can be found in the Archives, Categories, Recent Posts, and other widgets. Posts are also displayed in the RSS feed of the blog.

Pages are static and are not listed by date. Pages do not use tags or categories. An About page is the classic example. Pages can be displayed in the sidebar using the Pages widget, and some themes display pages in tabs at the top of the blog.

As you can see, it makes sense to create an “About Me” page and not an “About Me” post. Most likely, your “About Me” page will not change frequently, so we are looking for a static page, that is readily accessible from anywhere on your site.

Note: If you are SHARING one blog (ex. school blog) with other colleagues (many contributors on the blog), you can create various “About Me” pages (one for each contributor).

Here are 5 tips to help you get started with your About Me page.

  1. What is your site about? Whom is it for?
    Be clear from the start. Let your reader know right away what they can expect to read on your blog. Tell them whom you see as the intended audience. Should Hebrew and Jewish Studies teachers pay special attention or are you sharing “stuff” that makes a High school physics teacher’s heart beat faster?
  2. Talk to your reader directly
    Although this page is about you, your audience is SOMEONE ELSE, who wants to learn more about you and how reading your blog will help THEM. Make sure you tell them how and what types of projects/problems/ideas/research you are passionate in learning about and sharing.
  3. Tell the story of your professional journey.
    Explain how you got to where you are today. Tell the story of your journey. Enable your readers to understand how you know what you know and how and why reading your blog can connect to their own situation. Your backstory will make you more approachable as an author and more readers might relate to you this way.
  4. Use your own writing voice
    This is not an academic paper, this page is … well… about YOU. Don’t be too formal. Write the way you would speak. If you are funny, write it in a funny style, if you are multilingual, write it in the languages you speak, etc.
  5. Include media
    Consider including an image or a video as a sample of your work or your area of interest.

Here are some examples of “About Me” pages

Where do I create a new page or edit the default sample page on my (WordPress) blog? Follow this step by step instructions. If  you have a blog on another platform, such as Blogger, you should be able to easily adapt these instructions to locate the area to create a new page.

Start out by logging into your WordPress account and go to the Dashboard. On the left sidebar, you will find “Pages”.

Once you click on “Pages”, you will be able to choose from two options. 1- Add a New Page or 2- Edit a Sample Page (comes with a new WordPress blog by default).page1

If you choose to edit the Sample Page

  1. Change the title from “Sample Page” to “About Me”
  2. Change the Permalink from “sample-page” to “about”
  3. Add your “About Me” content
  4. Click the Update button

If you choose to add a new page

  1. Enter the title: About Me”
  2. Add your “About Me” content
  3. Click the Publish button
